iPollo New Product Launch Event| Jack Cui talked about Cuckoo Chips — strong hashrate, wide bandwidth and far better performance than GPU

On Dec. 15, 2020, iPollo G1-Mini New Product Launch Event co-hosted by iPollo, Interhash and POW POWER begined successfully at 16:00 pm, which represents the official start of the domestic distributed computing node! We invited Jack Cui, who is Cuckoo ASIC chip developer and vice president of Nano, to talk about the story behind Cuckoo ASIC chips.

Q1.Chip design companies in our view are very cutting-edge but very stressful. Please briefly introduce Nano, and talk about the reason why you choose to make Cuckoo chips? And what are the characteristics and advantages of Cuckoo chips?

Jack Cui : Nano is based in Hangzhou with branches in Shanghai and Shenzhen and a strong R&D team.Chip R&D is as cutting-edge and stressful as you said, but firstly we found the right direction, and then doing the hard but right things actually brought us a sense of excitement that could ensure the passion of the team. Our R&D office has a dashboard that shows the working progress of each R&D engineer and the status of each project in real time 24 hours a day. Under this atmosphere, the whole team works in an intense and efficient manner.

The core developers of our R&D team have been in the industry for a long time. They come from the top universities at foreign and domestic and used to work in the most famous companies in the industry for many years. They have successful experience in streaming film and mass production in manufacturing chips including 7nm, 10nm, 12nm, 22nm and 28nm. Especially, our team has the top technology in the aspect of strong hashrate and wide bandwidth, which meets the requirements of Cuckoo. The cuckoo chip is characterized by its strong hashrate and wide bandwidth, which can reach a maximum of 2 TBPS (2 trillion per second). As we all know, there were 4–5 teams at foreign and domestic who are developing the same product, and they were also very excellent. However, only we succeeded in the end, which also showed the difficulty of this product and our technical strength.

Q2.How long did it take to develop this generation of Cuckoo chips? How much manpower and material it cost? Can you tell us whether if there will be a next generation of Cuckoo chip? What kind of upgrades and new applications will Cuckoo chips have in the future?

Jack Cui : We’ve been developing the cuckoo chip for over a year, and we’ve had many outstanding R&D engineers working on it. Totally we’ve spent over 100 million dollars on basic R&D. The reason why we dare to invest is that we think there is a huge market expansion space of Cuckoo in addition to the current application. Our current Cuckoo chip uses the original architecture of our exclusive Nano FPU stream processor — — FPU-2D; In the future, we plan to launch upgraded FPU-3D and more products, aiming at data center, privacy computing, autonomous driving, artificial intelligence and other market directions, so as to provide better computing experience for users in various scenarios. Our Nano FPU mission is to provide basic hashrate for the digital world of the future.

Q3.As far as I know, due to the impact of the COVID-19 on the supply chain this year, the production capacity of chip mass production has been greatly affected. Does it pose a challenge to Howell’s chip production?

Jack Cui :This year is actually a special year, COVID-19 influenced us from two aspects, on the one hand, COVID-19 resulted in the insufficient capacity of the factory, on the other hand, COVID-19 has led to a surge in demand for large chips like networks and servers that follow our technological path, and we compete for the production line with NVIDIA, AMD, Intel and other international giants in which most of the packaging capacity and materials are booked until next year or even the year after. This is actually making a bad impact on us. However, we managed to complete the stream the night before the outbreak of COVID-19, and the first version succeeded. We successfully delivered the first batch of products to our customers. And we expect that after the supply chain is alleviated, we will deliver subsequent products very soon. We would also like to apologize to all customers who have not yet got all the machines but still have been with us through this journey. As for this small miner, the customers still bear the loss of late delivery and agree with us to support the Grin community and the decentralization of computing power with part of hashrate. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks and high respect for their great support.

On the plus side, of course, the current complicated situation is also keeping out potential competitors. For years to come, our chips will still be the only AISC chips in mass production for Grin, and our G1 will continue to top the list in hashrate.

Q4.Grin G1-Mini miner makes use of Cuckoo chips designed by Nano in its internal structure. Can you tell us again about the difference between miners with Cuckoo chips and Video card. Besides what is the difference between Cuckoo chips and Video card? Do the chips replace or crack the algorithm in video card?

Jack Cui :The Cuckoo chip belongs to ASIC chip, which is the best integrated circuit for the Cuckoo Cycle algorithm that Dr. John invented. GPU is usually used for graphics processing, it is suitable for not only processing image data but also implementing the Cuckoo Cycle algorithm, but it has no advantage in performance. Both Cuckoo and GPU are able to run Cuckoo Cycle algorithm, but the efficiency of the GPU is very poor. As for the calculation in Cuckoo Cycle algorithm, the Cuckoo’s power consumption is only one third that of the NVIDIA video card, and the energy efficiency ratio is more than 8 times that of the GPU.
